It happened. The weather finally broke here in Los Angeles. It has dipped down to long sleeve shirt wearing degrees. I like it... I think? No, I do. I do. But the problem is that I am a complete cold weather wuss. On so many levels.
During the summer people complain a lot about how hot it is. It's a SUPER popular topic of conversation that I have to partake in on most elevator rides throughout the summer. But that summertime heat never really gets to me (unless there's not an air conditioning unit in sight, then we are going to have a problem). But something about winter cuts through to my bones, and brings forth a big whiney baby.
Here are some of the more popular gripes you'll hear me say come November:
- "Oh my gosh my feet are cold." (because I refuse to stop wearing sandals)
- "Oh my gosh my hands are so cold." (because I refuse to wear men's gloves on my man hands)
- "I'm shivering." (because I shiver ... like an abnormal amount)
- "Wah! I don't have any winter clothes!!"
While trying on winter clothes:
- "BLECH! Wool creeps me out! Make it stop touching me!"
- "This jacket is too short on me."
- "This scarf is choking me."
- "This sweater is itchy."
- "These boots look funny."
But I'll tell you what - there are things I flippin' LOVE about the change in weather. Like blankets, and hot baths, and cuddling and big sweatshirts and California rain and... PUMPKIN SPICE LATTES!! (I will drink one in a warm bath - do not put it past me. I will do it and have a huge smile on my face.)
After writing in a previous article about my favorite pumpkin temptation, I found a recipe on Averie Cooks that's making me feel a little less guilty. Also, I can make these at home now and don't have to have Starbucks sucking all the money from my wallet. And for all of my vegans out there - these puppies are vegan approved, unlike our favorite Starbucks treat. Even with that soy milk, there is dairy in their recipe friends.
But no fear. Make yourself a batch of these and you will never have to return.
- 1 cup of milk - any kind will do. I used almond. Coconut is probably super tasty too.
- 1/4 cup of pumpkin puree (Don't fear being generous with your pumpkin serving - pumpkin that latte up!)
- 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice blend, or to taste (I went spice overboard and did 2 tsp. I'll admit it was a bit overwhelming. Start at 1tsp then keep adding as you please.)
- 1 tsp cinnamon, or to taste
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- A sweetener of any kind. I used 2 tbsp agave. Sugar, brown sugar, stevia, maple syrup - any of these will do.
INSTRUCTIONS: Get yourself a pot of coffee a brewin', or do a single serving - Keurig style. Make it slightly stronger than you prefer.
While the coffee is roasting, pour all of the other ingredients into a blender. Here you are going to make your pumpkin milk. This can serve as a delicious drink for a non-coffee drinker as well.
Once you are all blended and happy with your balance of spices, pour half of your milk concoction into your coffee. (Set the rest of your pumpkin milk aside for round 2.)
Stir your latte like crazy! (Don't be weirded out by the spices not dissolving. They won't entirely. It's going to be okay. Promise.) Add some whip if you like to make it fancy.
Now drink up, stay warm and enjoy! This will make the biggest of cold weather wusses happy.
