Spicy Pumpkin Smoothie - Ingredients | Benner Fit

Inspired by Wellness Nutrition Concepts' smoothie

¾ cup puréed pumpkin 

1 cup unsweetened milk (whatever kind of milk you please - we used almond)

1/2 banana

1 teaspoon cinnamon

½ teaspoon nutmeg

1 tablespoon of chia seeds

⅛- ¼ teaspoon grated fresh ginger (to your liking)

¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

Splash of maple syrup (or any preferred sweetener)

3 ice cubes (as many as desired)

Autumn in NYC...

I've been to New York in the winter, spring, summer, and this was my first time in the fall…

It was so dreamy...

I'm having post NYC trip disorder. It's true. I have loved New York since I first learned about New York as a wee little one. My childhood dream when I was just a mere ten years old was to be an optometrist during the day and a broadway star at night. I have always been very ambitious! :)

I've been fortunate enough to travel to NYC a few times a year for work and or play. This particular trip was a combination of the two which was ideal. Although, I did not end up becoming an eye doctor or a musical theatre performer I feel like the luckiest lady around that I get to do what I love everyday.

No matter where I travel to fitness is a part of my daily routine. And in New York City the fitness studios and class options seem endless. This particular trip I focused on my yoga practice and found some beautiful spots to do so.

I checked out Strala Yoga which is the wonderful, Tara Stiles, studio located in SOHO and loved the happy spirit of this space. It was light, bright, and welcoming! All the instructors have a positive and approachable presence which is really beautiful to walk into.

Jivamukti is a very traditional yoga studio located right near Union Square. Every instructor here has hours and hours of training and experience so you know you are in dynamic hands. The class I took had a beautiful flow, the transitions were seamless and although we held our poses for an extended length of time I really felt the energy and heard the breathe of all the students in the room which helped to center my focus. After class I ate at a delightful vegan cafe they have in the studio. The food was AMAZING! Even if you're not a yogi but you like to fill your body with healthy foods go to this vegan cafe, I highly suggest it!

I also popped into a group pilates class and a Yogaworks studio which has locations all over the U.S.

When you are on the road and you don't necessarily have the time or income to pop into a class remember that BENNERFIT circuits are always there and available to you! YOU deserve feel your best! Making yourself a priority is not selfish at all but rather a necessity because when we feel our best we do a better job of being that for everyone around us.

Pumpkin Spice Lattes and the Cold Weather Wuss

It happened. The weather finally broke here in Los Angeles. It has dipped down to long sleeve shirt wearing degrees. I like it... I think? No, I do. I do. But the problem is that I am a complete cold weather wuss. On so many levels.

During the summer people complain a lot about how hot it is. It's a SUPER popular topic of conversation that I have to partake in on most elevator rides throughout the summer. But that summertime heat never really gets to me (unless there's not an air conditioning unit in sight, then we are going to have a problem). But something about winter cuts through to my bones, and brings forth a big whiney baby.

Here are some of the more popular gripes you'll hear me say come November:

  • "Oh my gosh my feet are cold." (because I refuse to stop wearing sandals)
  • "Oh my gosh my hands are so cold." (because I refuse to wear men's gloves on my man hands)
  • "I'm shivering." (because I shiver ... like an abnormal amount)
  • "Wah! I don't have any winter clothes!!"

While trying on winter clothes:

  • "BLECH! Wool creeps me out! Make it stop touching me!"
  • "This jacket is too short on me."
  • "This scarf is choking me."
  • "This sweater is itchy."
  • "These boots look funny."

But I'll tell you what - there are things I flippin' LOVE about the change in weather. Like blankets, and hot baths, and cuddling and big sweatshirts and California rain and... PUMPKIN SPICE LATTES!! (I will drink one in a warm bath - do not put it past me. I will do it and have a huge smile on my face.)

After writing in a previous article about my favorite pumpkin temptation, I found a recipe on Averie Cooks that's making me feel a little less guilty. Also, I can make these at home now and don't have to have Starbucks sucking all the money from my wallet. And for all of my vegans out there - these puppies are vegan approved, unlike our favorite Starbucks treat. Even with that soy milk, there is dairy in their recipe friends.

But no fear. Make yourself a batch of these and you will never have to return.

INGREDIENTS:

  • Coffee
  • 1 cup of milk - any kind will do. I used almond. Coconut is probably super tasty too.
  • 1/4 cup of pumpkin puree (Don't fear being generous with your pumpkin serving - pumpkin that latte up!)
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice blend, or to taste (I went spice overboard and did 2 tsp. I'll admit it was a bit overwhelming. Start at 1tsp then keep adding as you please.)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon, or to taste
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • A sweetener of any kind. I used 2 tbsp agave. Sugar, brown sugar, stevia, maple syrup - any of these will do.

INSTRUCTIONS: Get yourself a pot of coffee a brewin', or do a single serving - Keurig style. Make it slightly stronger than you prefer.

While the coffee is roasting, pour all of the other ingredients into a blender. Here you are going to make your pumpkin milk. This can serve as a delicious drink for a non-coffee drinker as well.

Once you are all blended and happy with your balance of spices, pour half of your milk concoction into your coffee. (Set the rest of your pumpkin milk aside for round 2.)

Stir your latte like crazy! (Don't be weirded out by the spices not dissolving. They won't entirely. It's going to be okay. Promise.) Add some whip if you like to make it fancy.

Now drink up, stay warm and enjoy! This will make the biggest of cold weather wusses happy.

Layering

Fall... I think of red, orange, and yellow colored leaves, a cool breeze, pumpkins, and the holidays fast approaching.  Although, Los Angeles is still averaging a whopping 90 degrees!  At least for most of the country we are starting to think about bundling up with light, comfortable sweaters, scarfs, beanies, and cute boots!  Since I am running around town in workout clothes all day I have to come up with creative ways to make my spandex work if I have to run to a lunch meeting in between my classes.

The trick!  LAYERS!  I love layering in the fall and winter months.  With yesterday's post on the fall color palette, I've come up with a few ideas on taking your workout gear into an adorable outfit using the colors of the season.

If your hair is a mess from your workout pop on a hat!  Besides, hats are a great way to make an outfit look chic. And the sweater is simply gorgeous. Long sweaters such as these are on racks everywhere, not just in the workout apparel stores. If you want to save a bit of cash - head on over to Marshalls or TJ Maxx. They have amazing fall sweaters there for a great deal.

If the autumn breeze is extra chilling put on a scarf that has a pop of color, like this one from Urban Outfitters:

Pair it all with a cute and comfy pair of fall cowboy boots and your yoga outfit went from spandex to fabulous. Make it easy on yourself and get some adorable and affordable ones from Target!

But don't forget a cozy pair of socks to put on your hard working feet! (And it doesn't hurt that these Abercrombie socks are also super cute.)

So, even though cool weather is coming, don't feel the need to insulate from the inside! Let cozy wool and cotton do the work for you.
