USANA 5day Cleanse Overview

I did it folks! 5 whole days of cleansing! I can't believe I actually made it through. I've got discipline but I didn't think I had 5 days of it!

I posted about my day one experience and I was pleasantly surprised. I usually go into new things with an open mind, but I must say the thought of cleansing for 5 whole days seemed slightly daunting.

Usana and April Norris (USANA Independent Associate) kept me in check through this entire journey. I would receive daily emails filled with inspiration which were very beneficial during this cleansing process. Lets face it there is food temptation everywhere! What I LOVED most about this cleanse is that you are literally eating or drinking every two hours. That is way more then I do currently. Eating this often speeds up your metabolism and gets that body back in check.

I can honestly say, I feel better! My personal goal was just to see if I could actually make it through five whole days of cleansing. April was very kind in letting me know that I could eat as many fruits and veggies as I needed. I am very active so I have to be aware of my caloric in take.

Moral of my cleanse story is that the USANA 5day RESET Cleanse is pretty darn wonderful! I really want to stress to all my Bennerfitters out there if you have wanted to cleanse, this is the one to do because it's totally doable! You don't feel hungry all the time since you are constantly eating or drinking. All of the smoothies taste delightful, the chocolate was my personal favorite! The Usana protein bars were both filling and delicious. And I love my fruits and veggies so the fact that I could eat them whole without putting them down a juicer was a big bonus!

Healthy Superbowl Snack #1: Lemon & Herb Hummus

Lemon & Herb Hummus You guys, it's that time! The final week of football before it goes on hiatus. I'm so excited!!!!!

Ok, I kid. I actually really enjoy the game. Especially when I am able to get  invested in a football game...because I will get invested. The yelling,  jumping up and down, acting like a maniac - it's a good time.

But until I moved in with my then boyfriend, now husband -  I never realized that football is on every day of the week but Wednesdays... and sometimes even Wednesdays. Every. Day. For months. A whole lot of months. It can be kind of overwhelming. But thenagain, there's not much a reprieve in my household with sports. Once football is gone it turns to basketball, baseball, then golf and poof! Football is back. But these are the things in life that makes the hubby happy and that in turn makes me happy.

The Superbowl is one sporting event that I love to partake in. Celebrating the final hurrah of the season is a blast, especially thanks to fun drinks, day long snacking and funny commercials. This year will be extra exciting since I have a team to actually be invested in. Growing up, my best friend from back adored the Niners. My college boyfriend had season tickets. My husband loves them. I feel like it was my destiny to support the 49ers. So this year I will be acting a fool watching the Superbowl!

This time around though, I will be avoiding the potato chips and buffalo wings that I would usually indulge in, and I'm going to make this Superbowl a tasty, but slightly more nutritious snacking experience. So this week we will be bringing you some healthy yummy options to bring to that Superbowl party. Or for those of you who might be anti-pigskin, gather your friends up and use these recipes to have yourself a tapas night!

I was trying to think of a real crowd pleaser to start the week off with - the snack that is always eaten up first at a party.  While pondering, I stumbled upon this post on Cup of Jo . Oh, sweet delicious hummus! Brilliant! Not only did the article tell me this was going to be the best hummus I was ever going to have - the recipe came from Sara Forte of The Sprouted Kitchen - and I knew it was game on. { Both of these ladies are blogging goddesses. My heroes! }

While usually I'm a savory hummus kinda gal (pesto, red pepper, or garlicky flavors are generally what I lean towards) I ended up really getting into this tangier version. I made mine extra thick and textured, which I'm a huge fan of - but you can thin this recipe out to your liking by adding water or extra lemon juice (if you are bold and like your lemon!).

 

Lemon & Herb Hummus

 

INGREDIENTS:

1 1/2 cups cooked garbanzo beans 1/2  roasted shallot 1 1/2 tbsp. tahini Zest and juice of half a lemon 1/2 tsp. sea salt 1 tsp. fresh ground pepper Pinch of red pepper flakes 1/2 tsp. garlic salt 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp fresh parsley 2 tbsp. basil leaves

DIRECTIONS:

How to roast a shallot: Peel that sucker like you would an onion and cut it into quarters. Rub in olive oil and roast at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.

How to make your hummus:

Throw the beans, tahini, garlic salt, lemon zest and juice, salt, pepper, red pepper flakes and roasted shallot into your food processor and pulse to combine. If you can keep the motor running, then do so and add the olive oil slowly until it's smoothened to your liking. If you're like me, and can't keep the motor running on your processor - no fear...  just add the olive oil to the mix and continue to combine.

Cut up your herbs with food shears (or hand tear them up - that always works and leaves your hands smelling fresh!) Add the herbs to the hummus and pulse until combined. Take a taste. Add more spices or herbs if you prefer. Make it your own!

Sidenote - I'm SUPER good at forgetting ingredients when I'm making food. Upon my first attempt, I scooped out the hummus and dug in. My husband and I found the flavor to be VERY lemony - overpowering! So I went back to the kitchen to spice it up when I realized a forgot the tahini. OOOPS! Hmm ... yeah, let's talk about how that's a MAJOR ingredient. Lesson learned. Don't forget the tahini (unless you love a thick hummus rich with lemon flavor - then give it a whirl!)
